There are three options for the home preserver
Here are some of our home preserves, as you can see we have used any and all jars, but now use "twist top" jars, we get them free, and while recycling is very green ... re-using with no carbon footprint is even greener.
So let's have a look at the different "Home Preserving Jars" available.
OPTION 1 :- Re-Using "Twist Top" JarsValerie's favourite system, and very GREEN too.Ordinary jars from such products as pasta sauces and jams, from such brands as Dolmio to Golden Circle are being thrown out all over the country, sure the glass can be recycled, but we wanted to re-use the jars themselves, saving a huge amount of energy, and therefore reducing green house gasses.Safe preserving requires new lids for a more reliable seal, and vacuum, to be achieved when processing. This is due to the rubber ring on the underside of the lid deteriorating due to acid in the foods, and wear from general use. We now offer the six most common sizes in convenient packs of 10, 25, and 50, as well as a mixed "sampler" pack of 10, covering the complete size range. Valerie has now used "twist top" jars for home preserving successfully for over 5 years, and that includes low acid preserving in a pressure canner.

 Measure your old lids like this. The button on the "Pop Top" lids acts as a vacuum guide, if the "pop top" does not stay down straight after cooling you do not have a safe seal, and our advice is to either reprocess or refrigerate and eat soon. Each pack of 10, 25, or 50 New Lids comes with "Preserving Directions" and two of our own delicious recipes.

The new replacement lids are economical, with ALL sizes of lids featuring a "pop up button" in the centre of the lid to show a successful vacuum seal.

* - Manufacturers may occassionaly supply product in different jars, but we have checked these brands at the local supermarket recently.

This system is ideal as you only need to use new lids, the bands can be used many times, and there is a very easy method of testing for a successful vacuum seal, simply remove the band, if the lid stays on the seal is a success. We have found that Quattro Stagioni, and Frutta Delprato Jars from Coles and Bi-lo, here in Australia, suit these lids and bands too. |

Your grandmother probaly used Fowlers Vacola jars and even possibly their processing units. The major drawback to this system is the initial expense of purchasing the jars, lids, and clips, which are reusable, with a single use rubber sealing ring. Once purchased this is an excellant system, although giving your preserves away becomes "high risk" as you may never see your jar again. |
